From the canals of Venice to the court of Barataria, this is a rollicking ride of song, dance and impish humour.
The story begins with the gondoliers of Venice wooing and wedding the lovely flowergirls of the canals. Amid the couples are young gondolier brothers Marco and Giuseppe who are in love with Tessa and Gianetta, respectively.

Brecht takes George Farquhar's Restoration comedy The Recruiting Officer and transfers it to the period of the American Revolutionary War.
Captain Plume, the officer in question, arrives in Shrewsbury from London to enquire how recruitment to fight the rebels is progressing. He receives a discouraging report of military and romantic complications.

In addition to the virtuoso instrumental and vocal writing, frequent dances and a troupe of traveling circus performers make Smetana's The Bartered Bride a buoyant comic masterpiece.
