Padstow May Day

01/05/2012

May Day (or 'Obby 'Oss Day as it is known outside of Padstow) is the biggest day in Padstow's calendar. It is not unusual to see 30,000 people crammed into this little town on the day when Padstonians from all over the world return to their roots. The origins of the Obby Oss are numerous. Some say the celebration has its roots in pagan times, others that it's a rain maker, a fertility symbol, a deterrent to a possible landing by the French some centuries ago or perhaps a welcome to the summer.

Padstow May Day

01/05/2012

Description

The Padstow Obby Oss is reputed to be the oldest dance festival in the country and takes place on the first day of May (unless May 1st falls on a Sunday in which case the Obby Oss celebrations take place on the Monday - May 2nd).

The Day celebrates the Celtic festival of Beltane - The spring festival dedicated to the return of the Celtic sun god Bel, that causes the crops to grow and the hours of daylight to lengthen. The town is decked with flags, greenery and flowers.
