Porthminster Gallery in St Ives, is delighted to announce this celebration of the primal magic of Cornish landscape, expressed by these two great St Ives visionary artists: Sir Terry Frost’s pure abstract symbolic forms radiate an ‘electric’ energy in this joyous collection of fourteen vibrant signed silkscreen prints; Matthew Lanyon’s symbol-laden paintings are as much journeys through the artist’s inner landscape, as they are pilgrimages mapped through the aboriginal spiritual land of the Penwith Peninsula.

‘I’m working with landscape and mythology. Two figures – male and female, land and sea: It’s a way to explore something, coming again to places in Cornwall I experienced as a child, moving between the symbolic, the imaginary and the real.’
Born in 1951, in St Ives, Cornwall, Matthew is the oldest son of the celebrated painter Peter Lanyon (1918–64) – an undeniable influence in Matthew's work. Matthew studied at Leicester University and, from 1973, travelled through Greece, Turkey and Italy; in 1975 he explored India, Sri Lanka and Nepal – strong cultural influences that are evident in his paintings. Matthew moved back to Cornwall in 1985 and began working as a painter in 1988. He has exhibited extensively in London and the south–west – including Tate St Ives, and is widely collected.

In 2005, Matthew’s first solo show in the north was held at Minster Fine Art, York – the northern division of Porthminster Gallery, St. Ives, Cornwall. His work continues to be permanently represented by both galleries.

Sir Terry FROST RA
‘‘A circle means so much to me; it’s become like a god. I can use it in any colour I want, and often I use it in black, because I think a black sun is beautiful.’’ Sir Terry Frost RA was one of Britain's most successful and highly acclaimed artists of the Twentieth Century. He enjoyed a career spanning six decades, was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1992 and
recognised in the 1998 New Years Honours List when he was granted a Knighthood.

Born in 1915, Terry discovered his artistic talent during the four years he spent as a Prisoner of War in the Second World War. Upon his return to England he studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, enjoying the flourishing artistic scenes of London and St Ives.
By the late 1950s he had become established as a leading abstract painter, exhibiting regularly in London and throughout the world. Printmaking always played a key role in Terry's work, for him painting and printing were inseparable, with one medium creating ideas for the other.
