West by South West is a studio exhibition featuring paintings and ceramics by several of the foremost artists working in Penwith today: Ben Catt, Neil Davies, Brenda King, Jason Lilley, Lincoln Kirby Bell, Gary Long, John Piper, Michael Praed, Ken Symonds, Terry Whybrow and Ges Wilson. This group represents some of Cornwall’s finest artists whose work has been exhibited throughout the UK and abroad. They encompass a broad range of painting styles, from still-lifes and faux-naïve compositions to landscapes of varying degrees of abstraction. All are heavily influenced by the 19th and 20th century Newlyn and St Ives art movements and by the moors, mines, cliffs and coves that characterise the Penwith landscape.
Mowhay Barn is a barn that has been recently refurbished for the purpose of this exhibition. Formerly a carpentry workshop and before that a cowshed, it is located in the hamlet of Trebehor, just off the Land’s End to St Buryan road. The exhibition runs for two weeks and will be signposted from the B3315 near Polgigga. West by South-West is the first show in Cornwall for ELEVEN AND A HALF, a London-based art dealership specializing in the work of artists from the county. It represents 14 local painters and ceramicists, showing their work in exhibitions and at art fairs in the South East. All of the artists featured in West by South-West have been exhibited by ELEVEN AND A HALF in London in the past year. The show is open 7 days a week between 10.30am and 5.30pm.
